Collision Avoidance

Reducing the potential for collisions between overhead cranes, monorail systems, and fixed objects/obstructions has been a challenge for the overhead material handling industry for many years. Until recently it was only possible to minimize the resulting impact from collisions using mechanical means such as bumpers or limit switches. With today’s advances in electrical technology, it is now possible to prevent these collisions using more sophisticated means in a variety of operating environments. This means reducing maintenance costs and increasing operator safety.

Laser based distance detection and collision avoidance are primarily used in an automated environment where the distances between monorail carriers or cranes can be relatively great. The range of a laser based system (from 0 to over 1000 ft.) allows the ability to monitor distances between cranes, trolleys and monorail carriers, and when interfaced with a PLC, can be used to prevent collision between this equipment. Laser based systems also offer the advantage of precise positioning accuracy which is critical in an automated environment.


Electromotive® ReflexTM 120 & ReflexTM 120 Plus

The ReFlx 120 System features a two-channel infrared sensor, which can be adjusted to give separate outputs for each channel at distances from 20 to 120 feet. The most commonly wired configuration is the use of one channel to provide the primary stop command to the motion control, while the second channel is used as a redundant stop command.

To provide an extra measure of safety to your collision avoidance system, the ReFlx 120 “Plus” offers you the addition of a second, shorter range, sensor. The first sensor, which has two channels, is most commonly wired to use the first channel as a “slow down” command or warning signal, and the second channel as a primary top command. The second sensor has a single channel, with a range of 1.5 to 20 feet, and is most commonly used as a redundant stop command.

Electromotive® LaserGuardTM

The LaserGuard system uses self-monitoring optical lasers to monitor your crane’s position. This is the most technologically advanced anti-collision system in the industry. LaserGuard is flexible enough to manage crane-to-crane and wall-to-crane operation. The rugged NEMA 4X housing and Class 1 laser have a rated life of more than 10 years. Plus, it’s easy to install and maintain.

The Laser Guard has a range of 150 feet and can be adjusted for three individual contact closures within the range. The system also features an alarm circuit if signal degradation occurs.

Duct-O-Wire® CAS-1RA

The Duct-O-Wire LED Optic Sensor collision avoidance system for fixed distance on/off switching is designed for end collision avoidance applications. The sensor relays have outputs for N.O. or N.C. circuit control for the ability to open or close a circuit. The system can be powered off of 24 to 240 VAC or 12 to 240 VDC. The kit comes with mounting bracket, reflectors, and all hardware for system operation.

Duct-O-Wire® CAS-2L40

The Duct-O-Wire Laser Optic Sensor collision avoidance system for 2 Stage – slow down/stop control. Includes Class 1 Laser for accuracy and safety and pre wired unit with transformer, relays, cable, and reflector. System is capable of two programmable trigger events with N.O. & N.C. circuit control. The Laser Optic Sensor is capable of maximum distance ranges of 60 & 100 feet. Model CAS-2LA10 has additional features including an analog output and an extra Class 2 Laser for easy alignment.
